How the list is made

Telangana's holidays are notified once a year by the General Administration Department, usually in December for the year ahead, under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. The order is what actually governs government offices, banks and schools — not the panchangam, and not any calendar you buy.

It comes in two parts:

General holidays — closed for everyone. In recent years this has run to roughly 27 days.
Optional holidays — a longer list, from which an employee may take a limited number (recently five) with prior permission from their department head. This is how the state accommodates festivals that matter to some communities and not others.

The dates that never move

Five holidays sit on the Gregorian calendar and are safe to plan around years ahead.

The dates that move — and why we don't print them

Everything else shifts. Sankranti moves by a day at most, because it is solar. But Ugadi, Sri Rama Navami, Bonalu, Vinayaka Chaviti, Bathukamma, Dasara, Deepavali and Kartika Purnima all follow the lunar calendar, and Ramzan, Bakrid and Muharram are fixed only when the moon is actually sighted — the government order itself says these are subject to confirmation by the moon-sighting committee.

Why there is no year-by-year table here. We compared several secondary reports of the current holiday order and found them contradicting each other — one list placed Saddula Bathukamma ten days before the date it gave for Dasara, which is impossible, since Saddula falls two days before. We have not been able to read the primary Government Order. Rather than reprint a list we cannot stand behind, we have published only what is verifiable. A wrong holiday date is worse than no date.
